The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
