No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
