Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
